During the school holidays, many families find themselves with a little more time at home — and often, a little less structure in the day. At the same time, we regularly receive small advertisements in the mail, many of which come in the form of soft fridge magnets.
Most of the time, these magnets are quickly put aside or thrown away.
But with a small creative twist, they can become a meaningful and enjoyable art activity for children.
Today, we’d like to share a simple idea that can be done at home, using everyday materials:
DIY Fridge Magnet Art.
This activity is easy to prepare, suitable for a wide range of ages, and does not require any special art supplies. More importantly, it encourages children to see creative potential in ordinary objects.
A small fridge magnet (for example, from old advertisements or takeaway menus)
Paper (slightly thicker paper works best)
Pencils, coloured pencils, markers, or pens
Scissors
Double-sided tape or clear glue
Take an old fridge magnet and cut it into a small shape — a square, circle, or any shape you like.
Ask your child to draw a picture they enjoy on paper.
This could be an animal, a character, or something from their imagination.
Cut out the drawing.
Attach the magnet to the back of the artwork using tape or glue.
Place it on the fridge — and your child has created their own personalised fridge magnet.
Alternatively, if your child already has a sticker they really love, you can simply attach the magnet to the back of the sticker.
Although this activity is simple, it offers children valuable learning opportunities. Through the process, children practise:
Turning everyday materials into creative ideas
Basic planning, cutting, and design skills
Taking pride in their own work when it is displayed at home
Seeing their artwork placed on the fridge gives children a strong sense of ownership and achievement — something that is especially important during the holiday period, when routines are more relaxed.
For parents, this activity also provides a gentle way to connect with children through creativity, without pressure or complex preparation.
At Shine Art Academy, we believe that art does not need to be complicated to be meaningful. Small, thoughtful activities like this help children build confidence, curiosity, and a positive relationship with creative learning.
We hope this simple idea brings a little creativity and joy into your home during the holidays.
